The cream of further education and skills sector honoured at the STAR Awards 2008

The fifth annual STAR Awards – the Oscars of the further education and skills sector – were held in London on 24 November, with a college chef, a principal and an offender learning head among those honoured. The awards ceremony was hosted by Mike Baker, the BBC broadcaster, and Dr Floella Benjamin OBE, who both commented on the exceptional passion and commitment shown by all the nominees. As well as a trophy and certificate, winners received a cheque for £500 plus up to £1,500 from the STARlight fund for personal and/or professional development. This wonderful evening also celebrated the inauguration of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), the sector-owned body set up to support those working in the further education and skills sector.

Winner case study, Evelyn Shaw, Ruskin College

Ruskin College chef, Evelyn Shaw, won the 2008 STAR Award in the support role category.

Based at Ruskin since 1986, Evelyn is in charge of every aspect of the college’s food, from creating menus and buying supplies to cooking and serving meals. As an adult residential college, Ruskin takes learners returning to education, sometimes from very difficult personal and social circumstances so Evelyn has to cater for a wide variety of needs and tastes. “I serve what I cook so I get feedback first hand; I’m on the front line,” says Evelyn. “That makes this role more challenging than a lot of cooking jobs and certainly keeps you on your toes!”

Evelyn received a special good luck message before the national ceremony from former Ruskin College student, John Prescott, who said: “I’m delighted that Evelyn has been nominated for the support role award. She fully deserves any award, not just for the quality of her food, but for the warmth of her personality. Whether she wins or not, she will always be a star to me.”
